Interview with Dee Jaywalker from Marky Ramone and the SpeedKings (October, 2002)

Interview made for www.speedkings.fr.st, October 2002
Dee Jaywalker was one of the first person I interviewed. His song Sidewalkin gave its title to this webzine.

1) How old were you when you first started playing guitar?

I started out as a bassplayer at first and by coincedence i switch my bass for a guitar with a friend of mine and inever looked back...

2) Musically your main influences come from 50's stuff, what do you like most about 50's bands?
You also like Johnny Thunders and Steve Jones... Thunders has been such an important player but he has always been despised bythe critics for quite a long time...Steve Jones is still or less considered by many, just like his bandmates,as someone who couldn'tplay...what is your opinion about them?

In the 50's, rules were set for rock'n roll guitarplayin' by Chuck Berry,he had it all...i mean the playin' was pretty raw...he wrote hisown songs.....his lyrics are pure rock'nroll poetry and he was black...
considering that he was from the south....that wasn't easy back then.....he's now 75 and still performing....
The man can't live without playin' rock'n roll.....i admire the guy and take my hat of for everything he's done in music....to me he's thetruely king of rock'n roll.
About Thunders and Jones....they kept the spirit alive of Chuck....only they were pretty messy and raunchy....i like thatalot....especially The New York Dolls set the standard of what would later become punkrock....the sound of Steve Jones wasamazing.....pure fucking revolution!

3) What do you like about Gretsch guitars?

Well they have a very special sound and you can play all kinds of styles with'em.....and they look awesome...don't you agree? Youhave no better guitar for playin' rockabilly or surf ....depends on what type you use ,and not many guitarplayers dare to playpunkrock with a Gretsch...

4) Do you play other instruments?
Triangle...

5) Could you tell us more about other bands you've been involved with in the late 70's and 80's(Organised Pleasure,MaisonClose&The Definitivos/Whydads)?
What kind of bands were they?Punk?...

Organised Pleasure was nothing more than a gag...a bit cabaret, and totally nonsens....or you hated us or you loved us...we made a 7inch and caught a lot of airplay on national radio....i played both bass and guitar...it was a first step....

Maison Close on the other hand was a raw hardfunkydoomthing.....we were a fourpiece band but let always other people come in....on a certain gig we had like sixteen musicians on stage.....we were always exited about the outcome...we had no fear......we onlymade one demo unfortunatly.....i had fun in there....

The Definitivos were well known in the area and had a culthit with a song called The Modern Dance and Courtai Tonight.....i joinedlater the band and we made a 12 inch called Besse...about the gangster....you know...the remains of the band became the Whydadsand i had to take the leadvocals....
The album we made was produced by Theo Van Rock who was already producing Henry Rollins....
Nick used to be our roadie on some occasions and that's how we met....
He asked me to help him out on his first record and i did....playing a solo....doing the bass...it was my first experience as a "producer"....and i think he was happy with the result back then....
Around the same time i started a few bands and out of that came The Goldengalaxyjerks....
We were a heavyrocktrio and we took no prisoners....it was really heavy loaded stuff
Playin' around the country for a couple of years and making a7 inch on Boom records....we got airplay on a regullary basis and i stillhave a full cd left in my drawyer somewhere...
it was never released due of legal hassle.....

With Faroutski i made a cd....it was more something in between i did with these guys cause i already had the idea to start up arockabillyband.....it took a while but once i got the right guys i quit Faroutski.

8) Since 1996 you're fronting The Greyhounddogs.....with them you're mostly doing 50's stuff.....are you trying to get a record deal and release an album together?

No...we just want bring the spirit back of the music and the impact and power it still has....it's bringing back the old days andenjoying people....were having so much fun doing this and it's always partytime whenever we are around.....are fans are truely and devoted and we hang out as much as we can with them....it's the real deal....
I have written some original stuff for them....maybe someday we will realed it.....style Reverend Horton Heat and other wildsurftunes.....we'll see......

9) You joined the original line-up of the SpeedKings in 2001...You've been involved with bands since the late 70's so you have beenplaying for more than 20 years now...did you managed to live as a musician some times during these 20 years or were youconstently doing another work to live?

I've done several jobs.....but living on music alone wasn't exactly my goal.....
I know alot of people who do it or try ,but it's not easy......but if the opportunity knocks....why not?

10) I guess that The Speedkings first album is your biggest success in the music business
(along with The Whydads album wich caught international attention),since october 22 The Speedkings debut album is available in the U.S. and is distributed by a big company,Warner Bros...everything happened very fast and now the album can be found in the whole world, how do you feel aboutsuch quick succes after so many years of ups and downs as a musician? Is your life different now?

It's fun and an honour to get recognised by certain people....but Nick was really the guy who put The Speedkings on the map....he's done most of the work and is still doing it......i think he chose the right gang to make it happen.....he's a true buddy of mine and wefunction well together....we will always Rawk!!My life hasn't changed that much....were just people....

11) You're a great guitarplayer and you've got more than 20 years of guitarplaying behind you.....moreover you seem to be a rock'nroll purist....so what's your opinion concerning our contemperary musicscene? It seems to me that the lyrics of "Do youremember rock'n roll radio" are still up to date and that more than ever we need to fight to save the Rawk.

Thank you for the compliment.....well there are so many different styles nowadays....some i like ,some i don't....but to us it really doesn't matter.....we will always play this kind of music...it's here to stay....
The Pistols live on forever,The Ramones also and many others as well.....there's The Speedkings to continue that tradition and thatis our main task to keep the Rawk in to the Rawl....we can't help it!

12) How would you describe The Speedkings music ?

It's the real thing for the next decade.....kids will know the difference between real and fake....
It's an overall look of what happened in rock' roll the last 5 decades and out of that blend we try to bring back the Rawk as it shouldbe....mean....hard....raunchy.....sexy....conviction.....true believe.....fun.....and beeing yourself,no matter what you are.......be real!!!

13) Most of the songs were written by Nick, some for his previous band The Buckweeds.....do you write lyrics?

Of course...in my previous bands i always have written songs and will continue doing that.....i have made a some stuff for the newalbum.....you'll found out.

14) How long did it took to record the first album?

I have no idea...should ask Nick about it.....but i did my part on one night.

15) Is a DVD still planned?

I think so ....it'll take some time...were working on it....but were not in a hurry...we want to please our fans....cause they're veryimportant to us.....it's going to be something special, that i know!

16) It was planned that The Speedkings would record a song called"We're not gonna take it" for an upcoming movie...did it happened?

It's not out yet but it's still at stake.....

17) How many times have The Speedkings been touring yet?Do you enjoy beeing on the road? Is it like a drug for you?And how isit to play music with Marky Ramone who is a punkpioneer?

So far we did 4 mayor tours and it was always wild....you meet all kinds of people.....and your out there to give the audience a goodshow.....It's always fun to play for people...that's our thing....
we are really a live band.....we'll go for the whole nine yards....Rawkin' the place!!!!
Marky is a topquality drummer...speaking for myself.....it's awesome to play with one of your all time favourites.....

18) No Ifs,and no But's(a.k.a.Legends Bleed) was produced by Marky and Nick...would you be interested in producing?Have youever produced one of your bands?

Nick and Marky did a great job on the first album...they did a very good job on that....
Except for this band i was always involved in producing....it comes with the rest....

19) Tell us Dee...what do you love about Rawk?

Attitude in every way.....in everything you do....be yourself....that Rawks!!
We will see new audiences in Japan and th U.S.and we look forward to Rawk them all and mingle after the shows.....just as we did onthe last tour....That's what Rawk and The Speedkings stand for...beeing real!!!!
